2002 Bulldogs Baseball Alum Wins Super Bowl Ring!

Congratulations to Garfield Baseball alum, Isaiah Stanback, on winning a title with the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants! During his high school days, Stanback was the star quarterback on the football team, a forward on a powerhouse basketball team, ran track, and played outfield for the baseball team. He had the opportunity to pursue professional baseball having worked out for Major League organizations and even been drafted in 2006, but declined the offer. Instead, he accepted a football scholarship to play for the Huskies as a quarterback and wide receiver, also running sprints for the track team during his collegiate career. Since graduating from the University of Washington, he has had stints with several NFL franchises as a wide receiver and kick returner, with the highlight (so far) of being a member of the newly-crowned world champs. He remains a friendly face in the community and one of the greatest all-around athletes in Garfield history.

Garfield Baseball Tryouts Announcement

The first day for our 2012 baseball tryouts is Monday, February 27th, starting at 3pm and going til 6pm at Garfield Playfield. Please make sure to have all of your baseball gear with you and ready to go by 3pm sharp. The plan is for Garfield to field two teams this year, a Junior Varsity and Varsity, with the potential for a third JVC team if enough players turn out in the spring.

Please make sure you have everything updated in the athletic office by Friday, February 17th, including your athletic/ASB fee, physical exam (if needed), and any related documents (grade checks, release forms etc.)

Conditioning Workouts Update @ Garfield HS

Here is schedule for the next few weeks of conditioning workouts at Garfield:

no weight training on Monday, January 16th (MLK holiday)
3-4:30pm on Wednesday, January 18th
4:15-5:15pm on Friday, January 20th (after the baseball team meeting)
3-4:30pm on Monday, January 23rd
3-4:30pm on Wednesday, January 25th
no weight training on Friday, January 27th (day between semesters in-service day)
resume normal schedule for Monday, January 30th through Friday, February 17th
no weight training during midwinter break (Monday, February 20th through Friday, February 24th)

Winter hitting practice at K Center

The Garfield High School baseball team is holding batting practice at the K Center in Columbia City on Saturdays from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm through Feb. 25.

Practice is open to anyone planning to try out for GHS baseball in the spring.

The cost is $20 for the entire winter training program. Makes checks payable to GHS Diamond Booster Club and deliver to Scott Honican at the practice.

Players practice batting at K Center

The 90 minute program will include front and side toss and live arm. Instructors will help players focus on staying inside the ball and driving it hard.

Garfield beats Roosevelt, 5-1

APRIL 26 — Zach Ward’s 3rd inning 3-RBI 2B and WP John Trupin’s 6IP, ER, 6H, 2BB, K pitching performance led the Garfield Bulldogs to a 5-1 victory over the Roosevelt RoughRiders.

Spencer Scott had an RBI 2B and Trupin an RBI 1B in the 5th inning to complete the scoring for Garfield.

Roosevelt’s only run came in the 2nd inning on a bloop RBI 2B by David Long. LP Tim Moore pitched well for the RoughRiders giving up only an ER in 4.1 innings, but 3 costly errors by the infield led to 4 unearned runs.

In other action over the past month …

Ballard 13, Garfield 7

APRIL 21 — Ballard took the lead up seven but with one out in the 5th the Bulldogs came fighting back. They took advantage of some Ballard errors and capped ofF a 7 run inning with a solo shot by Trupin to tie the game. In the bottom of the 5th, senior Foor led off with a solo shot to take the lead back and Ballard added 6 more runs. Jaeger got the final 7 outs with 3 k’s to secure the win.

Garfield 10, Foster 7

APRIL 20 — The Bulldogs scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning and 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to come from behind and defeat the Foster Bulldogs 10-7. Junior Joe Renner pitched 3.1 innings of 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K relief to pick up the win. Hayes Gorecki got the final 2-outs with bases loaded in the 7th to earn a save. Alex de la Torre took the loss for Foster. Grant Bronsdon (1-2, 2BB, 3B, 3R,SB, RBI), Chandler Honican (2-4, 2R, 3B, 2RBI, SB) and Hayes Gorecki (3-3, 2R, BB, RBI) paced Garfield ofensively. Joel Gonzalez (4-5, 2R, RBI, 4SB) and Connor Forsyth (3-4, 2R, BB, RBI) led Foster offensively. — Herman Gilman

Garfield 3, Eastlake 1

APRIL 19 — John Trupin, a Bulldog junior, pitched his third complete game of the season, a 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 8K performance, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win over Eastlake which snapped an 8 game conference losing streak. Spencer Scott (2-3, 2B, 3B, 2RBI’S) and Ruben Palmer (1-3, R, RBI) keyed a 6th inning rally driving in 3 runs between them, giving Garfield a 3-1 lead that led to the win. — Herman Gilman

Skyline 7, Garfield 0

APRIL 13 — The Spartains shut out host Garfield. The Bulldogs collected only three hits, one each by Liam McFeely, John Trupin and Sam Kennard. That left the Bulldogs at 3-10 on the year, and Skyline at 6-7.

Newport 6, Garfield 5

APRIL 11 — Newport’s Nate Anderson was able to kick the ball loose on a stolen base attempt in the bottom of the 6th inning allowing Billy Sahlinger to score the go ahead run from 3rd base giving the Knights a 6-5 lead, and the win over the Garfield Bulldogs.

Newport’s Aaron Sandefur pitched 5 innings of 3H, 6K scoreless relief to get the win. The Bulldogs had jumped out to a 5-1 lead after 2 innings on a 2RBI 2B by Spencer Scott, a 2RBI 1B by Chandler Honican and a double steal.

Newport clawed back in the game in the bottom of the 5th inning keyed by a 2RBI 1B by Jared Fisher and tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 6th on a SF by Daniel Altchech off Bulldog LP Hayes Gorecki. Then Anderson took offfor 2nd and appeared to be out,but the ball came loose allowing the go ahead run to come in and score.

Issaquah 10, Garfield 8

APRIL 7 — The Issaquah Eagles rallied for 4 runs on 6 consecutive hits in the top of the 7th, then held off one final Garfield Bulldog rally in the bottom of the 7th to win a KingCo 4A interconference game 10-8.

Ethan Kalin’s 2RBI 3B gave Issaquah a 8-7 lead. WP Scott Boydston pitched 3 innings of relief and got the Bulldog’s John Trupin to pop out to shortstop with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th inning to preserve the Eagles win. Jake Bakamus (2-3) 3R, 2RI’s, 2B, 3B, Ben Rosellini (3-4) R, 2RBI’s, 2B and Brandon Mahovlich (2-4) 2R, 2RBI’s had big offensive games for the Eagles. Spencer Scott (3-3) 3RBI’s and Sam Kennard (2-3) 2R, 2RBI’s had big offensive games for the Bulldogs.

Redmond 11, Garfield 10

APRIL 5 – Redmond senior Michael Conforto came out of the bullpen with the tying run on 2nd base and struck out Garfield’s Sam Kennard to earn the save in a 11-10 Mustang win over the Bulldogs. Conforto was the 5th Mustang pitcher of the night and preserved the win for SP Dylan Davis who went 4.2 IP, 1H 4ER, 6BB, 6K’s. Redmond jumped to an early 8-0 lead against Bulldog LP Ian Zapolsky, which included a long 3rd inning HR by Zach Abbruza. The Bulldogs aided by 5 BB’s on 1H, cut it to 8-4 in the 5th inning, then the Mustangs Peter Hendron’s 3-run HR in the bottom of the 5th made it 11-4. Garfield then mounted a furious rally against the Mustang bullpen, scoring 3R each in the 6th and 7th innings, but Conforto was able to get the final out to seal the Redmond win.

Bothell 3, Garfield 0

APRIL 4 — Bothell senior Kevin Mc Shane out-dueled Garfield junior John Trupin, 3-0 in a marquee pitching match-up, giving the Cougars a 5-0 KingC0 4A record to start league play. Mc Shane went 6 IP, 3H, OER, 8K and 2BB, while Trupin pitched his 2nd CG (7 IP)of the young season, giving up 0ER, 2H, 11K and 2BB’s. Bothell junior Mark Woods figured in all of the Cougar’s runs.

In the 3rd inning he reached base after he struck out and scored on an infield out by Mc Shane. In the 4th inning after the first two Bothell batters reached on an error and a walk, he hit a 2-out, 2RBI 1B to make it a 3-0 game. Garfield mounted threats in the 6th abnd 7th innings by getting two batters on each time, but in the 6th, Mc Shane struck out 2 batters in a row and in the 7th, senior Eric Gregory relieved Mc Shane after he walked the first two hitters and got the save with a strike out and a double play ball. Garfield’s league record dropped to 1-4 with the loss.

Inglemoor tops the Bulldogs, 6-4

Garfield varsity lost a tight ballgame to the Inglemoor Vikings on a rainy Saturday afternoon, 6-4.

Obi Taylor keyed the win for the Vikings by stroking a single in the third inning off losing pitcher Zach Ward. The hit knocked in Blake Wilson, who had doubled off Ward for two runs a few minutes earlier.

Inglemoor had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings on RBI singles by Taylor, Garrett Van Diver and Tyler Beahan. But the Bulldogs put up four runs in the top of the third inning to go ahead, 4-3, on RBIs by Joe Markman and Hayes Gorecki and a two-out error by Viking 2nd baseman on Grant Bronsdon’s one-hopper.

Then the Inglemoor rally in the bottom half of the third gave the Vikings the lead back and proved to be the difference in the game.

Taylor started for the Vikings, but reliever Emmit Maki was credited with the win and the third reliever, Alex Morrow, earned a save.

The Bulldogs (3-5) will now prepare for their 3:45 p.m. game at home Monday game against Bothell. The Cougars go into the 4A KingCo game with a 6-2 record. In their last game, the Cougars beat Ballard, 6-5.
