Under the lights at Hartman Park, the Garfield Bulldogs pulled off a 2-1 win over the Redmond Mustangs in what turned out to be a great pitchers duel. The Bulldogs offense used 4 hits, 4 walks, and took advantage of 4 Redmond miscues to put up runs in the 3rd and 6th innings. Starting pitcher Owen Vickrey threw his first complete game of the year, striking out 6, while allowing only 5 hits and 1 earned run in 7 innings. Hayes Gorecki had a RBI groundout for the Bulldogs first run. Justin Arkills-McLain hit a bloop single down the right-field line to score what would turn out to be the game-winning run. The Mustangs hit the ball hard throughout the game, but right at Bulldogs fielders. Garfield’s defense had a nice rebound game after a rough defensive outing at Newport. The second baseman Gorecki made a nice catch to rob a hit on a line drive that was headed toward right-center field. Vickrey got stronger as the night went on, retiring 8 of the final 9 Redmond batters to finish out the evening. It was a good all-around effort from the Bulldogs for their first road win of the season.
The Bulldogs move to 3-3 in Kingco play, 4-6 overall. With a bye date on Wednesday, Garfield’s next game is Monday night at Woodinville.
The Garfield JV team defeated Redmond 6-4 at home. Mikio Habu and David Brinkley did a solid pitching job for Garfield, with Aidan Nuttall behind the plate. Eli Wilson played made plays all day long at shortstop for the Bulldogs. Jupiter Breuner went 3 for 4 with a double and 3 runs scored. Patrick Lin was 1 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases.
Garfield JV also played a game over the weekend, losing at Skyline 8-5. Evell Nelson swung the bat well, hitting 2 doubles and getting hit by a pitch twice. Garfield got out to an early lead, but was unable to hold off the Spartans bats. The JV Bulldogs offense and defense both looked much better than in previous games.
Garfield JV is currently 3-7 overall with a 1-5 record in league games. The Bulldogs JV team has a bye on Wednesday and will host Woodinville next Monday afternoon.
