Archive for June, 2014

2014 marks the end of an era for Garfield athletics, with the school dropping down to 3A for the upcoming school year. As a result, Bulldogs sports teams will move from the Kingco 4A conference to the Metro 3A conference, which the school left back in 1997 along with rivals Roosevelt and Franklin. Ballard moved up several years later with Franklin dropping back down not long afterward. Current members Ballard and Roosevelt will also move back to 3A next season, putting all 10 Seattle public high schools in the same athletic conference along with the 6 private school members of Metro 3A. The divisional alignment of the 16 teams has yet to be announced by the athletic directors, but it should make for less travel and a renewal/revival of rivalries among the city schools. Garfield had a 3-1 record against Metro opponents in 2014 nonleague games (win at Chief Sealth, win at West Seattle, loss at Blanchet, win vs Hale). We look forward to an exciting 2015 baseball season!

Kingco 4A Postseason Recap

Last month’s Kingco tournament saw the Crest division dominate the Crown division similar to how the divisions fared against each other during the regular season. Roosevelt was the lone Seattle school to qualify, making its first and only appearance in the Kingco 4A postseason tournament. Eastlake defeated Woodinville in the championship game, with both teams locking up the automatic state berths. Redmond came in 3rd place in the conference tournament to earn a spot in the district playoff game, but would lose in the final inning and narrowly miss making the state tournament. Eastlake lost in the state regionals, while Woodinville went on to place 4th at state in Pasco.

2014 Kingco All-Star Game

One player was selected to represent the Bulldogs in the Kingco Senior All-Star Game at Woodinville HS on June 5th. The 4A team defeated the 2A/3A team 4-2 in the afternoon game and then held on for a 6-4 win in the nightcap to sweep the doubleheader. Garfield’s Derek Billey went 1 for 4 with a stolen base and a run while playing right field in the second game.
