2016 Week 3 Recap

The Bulldogs opened the season with a trio of games against Kingco 4A opponent Issaquah on Wednesday, March 16th. The C-Team opened the season with an extra inning loss at Issaquah 8-7. The JV team won 7-6 on the road at Issaquah HS. The Varsity team, at home, ran into some strong Eagles pitching and lost a pitchers duel 3-1, but the team fared much better putting the ball in play compared to last season’s opener at Issaquah. Junior Alex Gregory took the loss in his first outing of the season. Freshman Owen Cobb provided the defensive highlights, making a diving catch on a line drive going up the middle from his shortstop position, then he caught a slicing line drive in right field later in the game.

The Varsity team hosted Nathan Hale on Friday, March 18th while the JV traveled to Meadowbrook for their game. Hale got the best of the Bulldogs in both contests, shutting out the Varsity 7-0 and defeating the JV 9-4. Senior Aidan Miller had a strong outing for the first several innings, but the Raiders tacked on insurance runs late in game to seal the victory. Zubin Kopischke had a couple line-drive hits to lead the Bulldogs offense.

The first week of regular season games wrapped up with the C-Team stomping Chief Sealth on the road on Saturday, March 19th by a score of 12-0 in 5 innings. The win is the first of Coach Deal’s Garfield coaching career.

Varsity: 0-2 overall, 0-1 in conference

2016 Week 2 Recap

Week 2 was marked by more rain. The Varsity jamboree site for March 12th was shifted from Island Crest Park to Garfield HS because Mercer Island’s field was unplayable.

The C-Team kicked off the preseason with a pair of jamboree losses for Coach Deal in the rain at Whitman MS against Ballard and Mercer Island. The pitching and defense was not so sharp, but they did swing the bats well.

The rain eased up just in time for the JV team to host its preseason jamboree at Garfield. Coach Fell’s season JV squad lost a tight one to Mercer Island, then ran away with a lopsided victory against Franklin Pierce.

Varsity played Ballard and Mercer Island in the late afternoon, with each jamboree game resulting in a scoreless tie. The Bulldogs pitching and defense looked good against the Beavers and the defending 3A state champs, the Islanders.
