The Skyline Spartans shut out Garfield 4-0 to start 2014 league play. Skyline relied on strong pitching and defense to hold the Bulldogs to just 3 hits in the team’s first win of the season. Skyline scored a run in the 1st and added 3 runs in the 3rd. The Spartans starting pitcher fell a single out shy of a complete game shutout before being lifted for a relief pitcher. The lefty successfully mixed speeds and location to keep the Bulldogs hitters off-guard all afternoon.

Justin Arkills-McLain threw a solid game in his second start of the season for Garfield, lasting 5 innings while allowing 5 hits and only 2 earned runs. Derek Billey had a single and a triple for the Bulldogs, but was doubled up on a line shot back to the pitcher to squash the scoring threat in the 6th. Duncan Skerrett had the defensive gem of the day with a sliding catch in right field. The Bulldogs Varsity (0-1 conference record, 2-2 overall record) play at Issaquah on Friday afternoon.

Garfield JV (0-1 conference, 2-2 overall) lost 19-4 to Skyline in 5 innings with not a lot of luck going the way of the Bulldogs. The highlights were Travis Weaver having 2 stolen bases and Jupiter Breuner making a sliding catch in center field.  On Friday, the JV team hopes to bounce back in a home game against Issaquah.

The Garfield Bulldogs lost a tough one this afternoon 7-5 at the hands of the Blanchet Braves.  The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead, but fell behind on a bases-clearing double in the 3rd inning. A big rally in the 5th inning put Garfield up 5-3, but Blanchet was able to even it up in bottom half of inning, capped by a solo home run to right field. Blanchet was able to score twice more in the bottom of 6th to go ahead for good.

Alex Chase, Duncan Skerrett and Henry Freed each had a pair of hits. Derek Billey, Ben Koerner, Tyler Nguyen, and Jonathan Yang each added sharply hit singles to help the Bulldogs plate their runs. The Braves only had one hard-hit ball off starter Toby Perkins, but were able to capitalize on walks and hit batters in the 3rd inning to score their early runs. Blanchet swung the bats well and played solid defense to hang on for the comeback victory. The Bulldogs move to 2-1 overall with their league opener coming up on Wednesday afternoon at Skyline.

The JV team lost at home to Lake Washington on Thursday night 13-2, allowing 13 unanswered runs in the 5th and 6th innings. It was a clean game through 4 innings, but the pitching allowed too many walks and the defense too many errors at the end. A good bounce-back performance was in order for this week as the JV Bulldogs knocked off Blanchet 7-2 today to move their record to 2-1 overall. Aidan Miller threw a lights-out 3-2/3 innings of relief, striking out 7 Braves batters. Alex Gregory led the offense by reaching base 4 times. Garfield JV’s next game is Wednesday afternoon at home against Skyline.

Garfield knocked off the West Seattle Wildcats 6-4 this afternoon behind the bats of Derek Billey, Alex Chase, Jonathan Yang, and Eli Wilson. Billey had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, Chase had a pair of hits, Yang had a 2-RBI single and score a couple runs, and Wilson had a timely RBI double during a 5-run 4th inning for the Bulldogs. A few quick early innings were followed by the Bulldogs capitalizing on West Seattle errors to jump out to a 6-1 lead. The ball seemed to jump off the bat, making for an action-packed afternoon on the fieldturf at Hiawatha Playfield. The defensive highlights included Billey making a beautiful sliding catch in center field and Yang making an acrobatic leaping catch of a line drive at second base.

Justin Arkills-McLain pitched 5 excellent innings, allowing only 1 hit while recording the victory. The Wildcats made a late run to close the gap to 6-4 on an opposite-field homer, but Henry Freed came in for the 6-out save to slam the door shut for Garfield and seal the deal.

Garfield JV was able to work just about everyone into the lineup in a 16-6 win over West Seattle. It was an all-around team effort with base hits from top to bottom in the batting order. Caleb Stocker had the deep drive of the afternoon with a triple to left field in the 1st inning to set the tone for the offense. Aidin Montefisher and Conor Nuttall provided solid pitching efforts for the Bulldogs (1-0 overall record).

The Varsity team moves to 2-0 overall with the win. The Bulldogs next game is on the road against Blanchet at Magnuson Park on Monday, March 24th. The JV team will play at home against Lake Washington on Thursday evening and then on the road at Blanchet next Monday afternoon.

The Garfield Bulldogs opened the 2014 season on the road with a 11-6 win in 9 innings against the Chief Sealth Seahawks. The final score was not indicative of the pitchers duel that the game was through the first 6 innings. Owen Vickrey threw 4 strong innings, allowing only 2 runs. David Brinkley relieved in his Varsity debut with 3 innings pitched and 4 strikeouts.

The Bulldog bats had some success against the knuckleball of the Seahawks starting pitcher, but left 13 runners on base throughout the afternoon. A couple Sealth miscues mixed with some timely hits by Garfield allowed the Bulldogs to come from a 2-1 deficit to take a 4-2 lead in the 7th. Chief Sealth answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, with the Bulldogs being saved by a strike from right field by Justin Arkills-McLain to throw out a baserunner at home plate.

Garfield loaded the bases in the 9th inning and had a 2-out rally led by Eli Wilson’s RBI single to right field to take a 5-4 lead. The Bullldogs continued to hit the ball hard and take advantage of wild pitches and walks from Seahawks to score 7 runs in the inning. Toby Perkins allowed 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th, but held on for the win. Duncan Skerrett and Alex Chase each finished with 3 hits, while Henry Freed had 5 hits for Garfield, including 2 infield singles. Chase also recorded 5 RBIs to lead the Bulldogs.

Garfield (1-0 overall) will play at West Seattle tomorrow afternoon while the JV team will open up its season at home against West Seattle. This pair of games at the West Seattle schools are a homecoming for West Seattle Little League alums and current Garfield Bulldogs Owen Vickrey, Alex Chase, Justin Arkills-McLain and Derek Billey. Last, but not least, a victory to open the season on St. Patrick’s Day would not be complete without wishing our assistant coach, Dan Billey, a happy birthday!
