The Skyline Spartans shut out Garfield 4-0 to start 2014 league play. Skyline relied on strong pitching and defense to hold the Bulldogs to just 3 hits in the team’s first win of the season. Skyline scored a run in the 1st and added 3 runs in the 3rd. The Spartans starting pitcher fell a single out shy of a complete game shutout before being lifted for a relief pitcher. The lefty successfully mixed speeds and location to keep the Bulldogs hitters off-guard all afternoon.
Justin Arkills-McLain threw a solid game in his second start of the season for Garfield, lasting 5 innings while allowing 5 hits and only 2 earned runs. Derek Billey had a single and a triple for the Bulldogs, but was doubled up on a line shot back to the pitcher to squash the scoring threat in the 6th. Duncan Skerrett had the defensive gem of the day with a sliding catch in right field. The Bulldogs Varsity (0-1 conference record, 2-2 overall record) play at Issaquah on Friday afternoon.
Garfield JV (0-1 conference, 2-2 overall) lost 19-4 to Skyline in 5 innings with not a lot of luck going the way of the Bulldogs. The highlights were Travis Weaver having 2 stolen bases and Jupiter Breuner making a sliding catch in center field. On Friday, the JV team hopes to bounce back in a home game against Issaquah.
